Colonoscopy Instructions For Fleet Phospho-Soda Preparation
If you have congestive heart failure or kidney disease please let us know. You may need a different preparation.

If you are diabetic and take medication for diabetes, please discuss with your physician what diabetic medication you should take the day before and the day of your procedure.

Seven Days Prior To Colonoscopy
Please inform us if you are taking any blood thinning medications such as Aspirin, Coumadin or Plavix or any anti-inflammatory drugs such as Celebrex or Vioxx. They may need to be discontinued 7 days prior to your exam. Do not stop any medications without consulting our office. Please discontinue all vitamins containing iron and vitamin E 7 days prior to exam.

Two Days Prior To Colonoscopy
Continue your regular diet, except for raw vegetables and fruits. You may eat cooked fruits and vegetables only.

Purchase a 3 ounce bottle (or 2 1.5 ounce bottles) of Fleet Phospho-Soda from any pharmacy. This is a non-prescription drug and can be purchased almost anywhere.

Day Before Colonoscopy
  1. Have a light breakfast. A light breakfast may include any of the following items:
    - 2 boiled or poached eggs
    - small portion of skinless turkey, chicken or fish
    - white toast with no butter
    - any of the items that are listed below, as clear liquids
  2. For lunch and dinner, please drink only clear liquids. Solid foods and milk or milk products are not allowed.
  3. Clear liquids include the following:
    - Strained fruit juices without pulp
    - Water, tea or coffee (no milk or non-dairy creamer)
    - Soft drinks
    - Gatorade
    - Fat free or low sodium chicken or beef broth / bouillon
    - Hard candies
    - Jell-O, popsicles, or Italian ices

    PLEASE AVOID ANY RED COLORED FLUIDS!!!!

  4. At 6:00 p.m. on the evening before your exam, add 1.5 ounces of Fleet Phospho-Soda to 4 ounces of cold, clear liquid (you may mix with anything that is listed above as a clear liquid). Drink the 1.5 ounces of Fleet Phospho-Soda. Follow this with an 8-ounce glass of clear liquid. You may then drink all the clear liquids you desire. Try to drink at least 3 more 8-ounce glasses of clear liquids before retiring.
  5. If your Colonoscopy is scheduled before 11:30 a.m., you should take the second dose of Fleet Phospho-Soda at 10:00 p.m. the night before your exam rather than at 5:00 a.m. on the morning of your exam.
Day Of Colonoscopy
  1. At 5:00 a.m., drink the remaining 1.5 ounces of Fleet Phospho-Soda mixed as noted above in 4 ounces of cold, clear liquid.
  2. You may then have clear liquids up until 4 hours before your scheduled procedure - then NOTHING else, including water!
  3. Report for your appointment at your scheduled time.
  4. Final Note: You are not to drive yourself home!!!!!
    Due to the use of sedation, your ability to drive and/or operate equipment will be impaired.
Please note that individual response to laxatives varies. This prep often works within 30 minutes, but may take up to 3 hours. Please remain as close to a toilet as possible as multiple bowel movements may occur.
